DETAILED GUIDED ITINERARY:

Muskox

Set your sights for a Trip of A Lifetime with a fully escorted artistic adventure to the GREAT NORTHERN ARTS FESTIVAL in Inuvik, NWT CANADA.  This special trip will move your creative soul and renew your spirit of adventure as we travel through the Yukon and into the North West Territories of Canada. This once a year festival in Inuvik, the LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN showcases the Native Art of the Far North.

GUIDED TOUR DATES 2009
July 7-14 (Northbound)
July 15-23 (Southbound)

This schedule reflects the Northbound tour; the Southbound tour will include an additional day in Inuvik.  Southbound tour begins in Inuvik and ends in Skagway.  Northbound tour will include opening day activities; Southbound will include closing day activities.

Day 1 - SKAGWAY / WHITEHORSE

Meet in Skagway, AK  and mid-morning we'll set off to make our way to Whitehorse, stopping for photos of the breathtaking scenery, Kathleen Lake and other interesting spots. We'll arrive in the afternoon, and tour FolkKnits if you like as well for an introduction to qiviuq and muskox.

Day 2 - DAWSON CITY

Stopping along the way to view historical sights, we travel on the Klondike Highway to Dawson City, the famous Gold Rush town.  Our accommodations are a B&B all to ourselves complete with hot tub, fabulous full breakfast and laundry facilities. You're on your own tonight to relax, explore, or go to Diamond Tooth Gerties etc. We'll have an early start in the morning.

Day 3   - DEMPSTER HIGHWAY

After our scrumptious breakfast, we'll be off early to the Dempster Highway.  The highway is a "a modern frontier road". It has a gravel surface and can be a less than smooth ride, but the journey and scenery is well worth it.  Today we'll see the spectacular Tombstone Mountains, go through the highest elevation North Fork Pass (4229 ft.) and follow the Blackstone River. At mile 150 we'll cross the continental divide for our first time and arrive at Eagle Plains (mile 226 the only rest/ service stop) the halfway point where we'll stay overnight.  On the way we will  take a picnic lunch, snacks, drinks.

Friendly FaceDay 4   - INUVIK

Soon after our start this morning at mile 250, we'll cross the Arctic Circle. The Dempster Highway is one of only 2 roads in North America that cross this invisible, magic line. We'll continue on our journey, crossing the continental divide a third time in the Richardson Mountains; taking a ferry across the Peel River and on to Tetlit Zheh (Ft. McPherson).  We'll take another Ferry across the McKenzie River at mile 380 and continue on to arrive in Inuvik.

Today is the opening of the Great Northern Arts Festival and we'll plan on attending the opening day activities into the evening. Remember is remains light 24 hours - this is the land of the midnight sun.  (Southbound tour will feature the closing ceremony)

Day 5 to 6 - INUVIK

For these next 3 days, you are on your own as far as events and activities.  Once we have received the information about the schedule of events for the Great Northern Arts Festival (at this date it is not yet published) we can set more of a schedule for dinners.  You'll be on your own for breakfasts and lunches,  and we will plan at least one dinner together on our last evening in town.  This is the only dinner included in Inuvik.

This is where we need to see what extra activities the group wants to do together or separately.  Please read carefully through the section on SIDE TRIPS in order to determine which of these events are ones you would like to experience.  There are several which require advance reservations.  Once you have signed up I will share information about current pricing and scheduling. Last year a group  visited Herschel Island and it was absolutely thrilling - I would certainly encourage you to look into this trip as a group. Some of the adventures here are once in a lifetime opportunities. Several wanted to go to Banks Island to see the herds of muskox, and this is certainly something that we can arrange if there is enough interest. This would likely be an overnight trip.

Day 7 (Departure Date) - HOME

After saying farewells to your new friends and Inuvik, you're on your way home.  Your options for leaving Inuvik are as follows:

bullet

Fly from Inuvik to Whitehorse--from there, you can:
bullet

Take a motor coach/train combo to Skagway, then fly or take the ferry to Juneau and continue home;

bullet

Fly to Fairbanks and tour the interior of Alaska

bullet

Fly to Vancouver and continue home

If you are interested in extending your tour before or after the Festival, we'd be happy to help you with arrangements. We know Alaska and can assist you making your choices and reservations.
